Firefly - Mal WTF?
Just heard from a friend that the Saturday-night Shindig (Whedonverse track) got scrubbed this year!!! Someone please tell me this is just an unsubstantiated rumour, and if it is not, somebody please tell me where I can reach the organisers and let 'em have it!!!!

You'd skip DragonCon because one party on one night isn't happening?

NO SHINDIG!?

I has a sad.

Looks like we'll have to create our own unofficial one ;)

I second this!! ;)

On the bright side, maybe there will be something else fun to do. Maybe James Marsters will do a concert (here's hoping, LOL)

Oh that'd be awesome!

There's always a"do it yourself" shindig. And there needs to be a "Browncoats: Redemption Sales" wrap party too. BTW has anyone contacted the track director?

It's never been a good party, even though Whedonverse is one of (if not the) biggest fandoms there. BSG Colonial party is excellent and has lots and lots of Browncoats. In fact, a few years ago, there were more people in Firefly-garb than BSG garb at the Colonial party.

Is the whole Jayne's Drinking Games Party supposed to replace the Shindig? It was unclear.

I don't think the Colonial Party's happening either. At least not as held by The Colonial Fleet as we've done in past years.

Isn't Dragon*Con itself one big Shindig? :D There'll be Browncoats alike, joyful times, beverages regardless of what any official programming may be called.

This. But, my guess is that they will be holding more generalized parties, kind of like the Mad Scientist Ball.

Anyway, these things are more difficult to get into than most panels.

Shindig is my main get-together with all my friends that weekend. It's the one night I can see almost everyone I know at the con at the same time.
I'm sad that there won't be one this year. Shindig is one of my favorite reasons for going to DragonCon. Guess we'll see what happens.

I really hope this isn't the case.

This is my first year at Dragoncon and that was the thing I was looking forward to most.

Well, it seems the official word is that the Southeastern Browncoats, who are usually behind the Shindig and other Browncoatish activities at D*C, have 'other priorities' this year and the Shindig is too much for the regular D*C organisers to handle. If you ask me, it would be damned shiny if some other Browncoat group would step up to the proverbial plate. Of the groups within a half reasonable distance, the Austin Browncoats always have something in the air, and currently the New England Browncoats are occupied with planning the Browncoat Ball. Anybody from Mid-Atlantic or Chicagoland have a fancy toward filling the gap for us?

As the SEBC organizer that has done all of the Shindigs basically by myself, though last year we had the awesome support of Browncoats: Redemption, and paying for it out of my own pocket with little or no help (and most times passive hindrance) from D*C, yeah, I needed a break. I was also told that there was a strong possibility that the Whedonverse track would be pursuing a different theme party this year. With that information and our incredible run, we figured it was a good time for me to step aside and let another portion of the Whedonverse fandom have the glory.

I am disappointed that no other party materialized, but that's D*C. There's never enough time, money, or people to do everything we want to do and Wayne does his absolute best to try and please everyone every year.

As for myself, come Saturday night at the con, I'll be sitting in the Marriott bar, having a drink, enjoying the sights, and making my own Shindig. Everyone is welcome to join me, Browncoat or not. And hey, there won't be a long ass line to stand in.

The Shindig is a massive effort and I did not get the same opportunities to pull together all the groups usually involved this year that I normally do. The decision not to host the Shindig was entirely mine as I did not want it to suffer in quality due to the lack or normal attention it usually gets. All of us that plan it (SEBC/Whedon Track) exhaust ourselves to pull it off and Serenity is correct when she stated that could really use a break from organizing it this year but I already plan to put as much effort as possible to host it next year. I look forward to your thoughts and support to make that happen!

OK, guys. I'm sorry I sounded off. It was upsetting to hear about at first and I couldn't be bothered to check into it before going D=. Just one more cross I'll have to bear until I drop dead....Hopefully I can make up for it by letting the upset masses on Facebook know where you're coming from.

Thank you for sharing that. And your icon makes me both laugh and swoon.

This will be my...12th? 13th? DragonCon, and I've come to realize something over the years. Remember every year is different, special, and awesome in its own way -- and then you will be happy.

(Unless, like me last year, your room is hijacked by your sister's obnoxious anti-geek coworker who hits snooze for 1-2 hours each morning starting at 6am, sings along to disney songs while you're trying to sleep, refuses to watch dragoncontv, and tries to throw away your laptop. when that happens, you spend most of the con thinking up new and progressively more horrific ways to kill a person without having to go to jail. Dark, dark times.)

ACK!!! That sounds horrible! Hopefully Karma will make this year your best Con ever!
