One day Pass?
8th-Aug-2010 01:49 pm
rapunzel, tangled
Because I may have missed it and the situation just came up today I have to ask.

We have a friend who (Due to his insane girlfriend refusing to get a job and carry her weight)won't be able to afford the entire weekend. He's supposed to be in our parade group on Saturday (And is an important part). So, here is my two part question:

1) How much is JUST Saturday? (I looked on the website and could only find the whole weekend prices) Because we will most likely have to help him financially to attend.

2) Can you pick up Saturday passes on Friday? the reason I ask is because line up for the parade is 9am and I want to make sure we are ALL together in time for the parade.

If this question has already been answered, I apologize for those who have to repeat the answer, but there isn't a real search for this question on here.

Thank you!

You can only buy a one-day pass on that specific day. Therefore, you can't buy a Saturday pass on Friday.

Membership info is on the D'Con page here: http://www.dragoncon.org/members.php#DC_Memb

In other words... We're screwed for the parade pretty much yeah?

Contact the parade director.

I do not know what time registration opens on Saturday, though.

One other thing, while the parade does start line up at 9am, it does not "step off" until 10am so a small delay doesn't kill someone's chances of being in the parade.

I don't know how the parade works...but it's on the streets of ATL. You have to register for a badge just to step in a crowd of people who are not on convention grounds? I kinda doubt anyone at the con has the time or resources to badge check every person in costume...

"...you must be a member of Dragon*Con to march in the parade."

So, there are D*C Security people badge-checking thousands of people and telling them to go stand at the side of the street otherwise? Again, fruitless and waste of volunteers.

We're also talking about someone who has full intention to pay their dues to D*C.

If you want to be 100% on the up-n-up I suppose one of your group could volunteer their morning hrs to save your friend a spot in the badge pick-up line, but I don't imagine it's open before the Parade is. Would be quite a hustle.

No, D*C security might not be able to check everyone, but if they do see it happening it is not pointless to remove such people.

The parade isn't a free-for-all. It is not a self-contained convention event. It consumes Atlanta city resources -- closing streets, redirecting traffic, a police presence. There are permits and contracts involved. Sure, one or two people won't make the whole thing fall apart. But this is a classic slippery slope situation. D*C has to make a good faith effort to abide by their own guidelines.

I'm sure that's what the website says and all, and I'm in no way affiliated with the con, but I'm not so sure the no badge no parade thing is the case. For two years now I have watched a (very attractive) male belly dancer get dropped off before the parade, partake in the belly dancer troupe, with no badge, no shirt, no shoes, and after the parade, poof, he's gone. I wouldn't have really paid much attention but I got a decent picture of him the first year, so when I saw him again the next year, I found it very pecular that someone would just show up to march in the parade, and he's always such a prodominate part of the belly dancers (at least the last two years, that Ive seen, I'm not sure about more).

See, that was my other thought: How many people forgo the badge because it doesn't fit with their costume? I've seen pics of people without it in the parade (or hotels) before myself.

You don't think it's pointless to remove people to the side walk where they can just go a block down and get back in the parade if they wanted? Okay. Wouldn't want that job.

I didn't say it was a free-for-all: We're also talking about someone who has full intention to pay their dues to D*C.

Insurance. It only covers a situation where D*C can absolutely say without a chance of being proven wrong, "All people marching in this parade were badge-buying members of the convention." If some whacko comes barrelling out of the crowd and punches out a person marching, or if some nutjob sues D*C for having shown too much bootay in that one costume group, the only way the parade is covered as far as the City of Atlanta Municipal Government is concerned would be if the only people marching are the ones covered by the demonstrators' license and the insurance.

And, frankly, we attendees of Dragon*Con are the LAST people in the world to be trying to claim that there's no chance of a whacko or a nutjob showing up!

Keep checking here as some people will end up having to sell their memberships due to being unable to attend. You might be able to pick one up for similar cost to a one day pass and have three day instead. Most people try to make their money back but I have seen some sell at below cost too.

Seconded: He has to have a badge, and it has to have that Parade ribbon on it, but there's a process for picking up your friend's badge from the Preregistered side of the Registration line. Pick up one of the ones from somebody who preregistered at the end of last year's con (usually around $50), add $20 for the badge transfer fee, and you're golden.

For comparison purposes, the Master has determined that a one-day badge for Saturday only is ALSO $50 this year. So call_me_sick, your friend would save the $20 transfer fee but have to bust his patootie to be one of the first people in the Registration line in the wee hours of the morning, then book several blocks down to the Parade starting point to meet up with you guys. It can be done, but that's a lot of home-baked cookies his girlfriend would have to make for him....

So basically, it's a lost cause. At least I know it's a waste of time to even attempt it because of where he is trekking from. Thanks guys. AT least he'll get to sleep and we'll only be missing one person in our group. :\

This is irrelevant to your badge issue, but I just wanted to say 'hi' from me, "Dean's Mom" of 2-years back. What costume groups are you in this year? So far I'm only hooked up with the big Greek Mythology one.
